Regardless of whether you’re sending a welcome series to new subscribers or an announcement about a product launch, your goal is to get the email in your inbox. Often, even with a healthy email list, some of your emails won’t make it through to your inbox and will end up in social media, updates, or other folder that doesn’t receive much attention. This is why focusing on email deliverability is so important.
The way to ensure that your emails are delivered is to understand the process that ISPs go through with each and every incoming email. Each email is vetted by ISPs to check for nefarious intent or unsubscribe requests, and they have a set of tools they use to do this. Unfortunately, these same tools can impact your deliverability in negative ways.
ISPs look at two things: your domain reputation and your IP reputation. Both can impact your ability to deliver your emails, and a variety of factors including spam complaints, hard bounces, and a sudden increase in the number of your subscribers can affect both.
A good email reputation comes from having a valid domain name that is correctly configured, using an authenticated sending server, and using a double opt-in to weed out non-responsive addresses. Your reputation can also be impacted by the number of spam complaints you receive and by being listed on a blacklist.
As your sender reputation improves, you will increase the number of emails that are delivered. If you have a great inbox placement rate, focus on increasing your open and click-through rates to drive more sales.
